Again I wish I was writing from "afar", several days ago, but I don't have a portable laptop, and I may not have had the time anyway. I tried to spend all my time in Toronto on human interaction or movie screen encounters. So, I am back here in my cosy room (a former balcony converted to a nursery for a previous tenant, now converted to my office). I've returned from a too-short visit to one of the film festivals I love, the Images Film Festival. This is a cutting edge, experimental film, video, media performance and installation festival that I heard about in 1997. Just as my experience showing Chronic at Images back then, I've come away satisfied with having been exposed to some excellent work that may or may not cross the iron curtain to the US, so I feel again fortunate to be a part of this roaming film festival community.
I showed my double-projection Light Work Mood Disorder there, enjoying some deeper conversations about it as well as great appreciation for visual qualities and the music track by Anthony Burr. The work showed for the first time in a shorts program, with projection assistance of Antonella (the high-energy, superb projectionist). I was in the booth for the first time (instead of nervously running projectors from within the audience). I think perhaps the audience was less distracted by the sight of me negotiating ancient projectors and the noise of the projectors didn't interfere with full engagement with Anthony's music. I wonder if I should push for more shows like this (technical reasons with projection throw and lenses make it impossible some places).
I saw one of the best shorts programs I'd seen in a while on Sunday and was introduced to some new-to-me filmmakers in the process. I want to give mention to the titles in this particular program, in case a programmer out there happens to read this. I can't possibly mention all the pieces I enjoyed at the festival, instead I'll put a link to the festival program in my growing venues list to the right. The program was Within and Without We Continue Along (programmers I think responsible: Leslie Peters and Pablo de Ocampo) Titles:
Outwardly from Earth's Center (Rosa Barba), This in Not an Anchor, This Boat is Not an Anchor (Marianna Milhorat), Isolated Landscapes (Heidi Phillips), Echo Park (Paul Clipson), and a film I enjoyed as much this second time as at the New York Film Festival Views program: Observando el Cielo (Jeanne Liotta-). I can't remember the last time I enjoyed 100% of a program! I think that's a rare experience for anyone. I'm sorry I'm missing all the rest of the programs that continue through the week.
And another thing that makes this festival rather special. It's Pay What You Can. So it won't break the bank, or financially exclude segments of the public, as most film festivals do (often ones with bigger budgets)!
Here's a video portrait I took of another notable all-encompassing cinematic experience this weekend- a four 16mm projector performance by Greg Pope, with music by Knurl, Light Trap. (Jeanne Liotta, Filmmaker and Scott Berry, the Exec Director are featured in the light of it):

isnt it a strange thing, buying found footage from ebay? how do you feel about it? ive been doing the same recently and cant help thinking how weird it is... im working on an installation made completely from lost 8mm memories.. very thought provoking stuff..
i should have said, im buying home movies that have somehow ended up being sold on certain online auction sites... hmm, its weird ;) but still very interesting i think...
